Dialogue

We start every project by listening and asking questions. We want a thorough understanding of your goals and lifestyle. We spend time at the site, absorbing the views and topography, and getting a feel for the unique aspects of the property. We research the site constraints, study surveys, record drawings, and zoning codes.

To us, successful architecture integrates seamlessly with its site. A home must work in its specific locale, whether it is set on a coastal bluff, in an arid desert, or on a snowy peak. Our goal is to create a beautiful simple design that works for the place and for the family that inhabits it.

Design

We begin sketching, in search of a simple solution focused on balance and proportion. We like to meet with our clients frequently to share ideas and get honest feedback. As the design takes shape, we create a three-dimensional computer model of your home. This model allows us to study the architectural forms, but also get inside rooms to better visualize the spaces and volumes. We create renderings to study the form and light. Later we get into materials and provide physical samples to consider the tactile aspect of finishes. We are rigorous in our approach to mass, volume, material, proportion, and light.

Construction Documents

Next we engage a team of consulting engineers, chosen based on their specific skill sets and appropriate to the project. During this phase we focus on creating an exhaustive drawing set that includes all the information required to obtain a building permit and a realistic construction budget. We work with you to select all the interior finishes, including door hardware, plumbing fixtures, and window treatments. We coordinate the technical aspects of the project with our consultants, to create a detailed set of documents. We believe a thorough and thoughtful set of drawings is the key to a successful project.

Build

With a meticulous set of drawings, we guide our clients throughout the construction process. We work with the builder and tradespeople to execute refined and well-crafted details. This is an intimate process. Knowing you will move through these rooms every day, we understand that spaces need to work as well as be beautiful. Materials and texture are important to us. We appreciate clean details and connections.

Live

We take a holistic approach to design, meaning we don’t limit ourselves to architecture. We enjoy designing a unique custom furniture piece specific to your home and needs. We can help select walls to showcase your art collection and highlight special pieces with museum-quality lighting.
